A mythical passionate notion that two soulmates will meet in every life time; no matter the century or decade, gender identity, sexuality, dreams, hopes or fears, lead itself to a tale of epic romance. For Evelyn and Arden, they are fated to always find and love each other in every reincarnation. Our soulmates, however, are also doomed, for they are destined to kill each other in every lifetime too, where killing the other also kills themselves before they both turn eighteen on their shared birthday. One cannot be alive without the other.
In the midst of Our Infinite Fates, the fate and force that is love, and the love of our two soulmates is described as pre written in the stars. No matter our soulmates’ family, gender identity and sexuality and no matter when or where they are reincarnated, they find each other, for better or worse.
It matters not whether these soulmates meet at their deaths, where one is fated to kill the other, or they have loved each other since they were wrong. It does not matter if they are born as nobility or villagers, or where and when the soulmates are reconvened, from Europe to Asia, from the 18th century to the 21st century. They are born as two boys, two girls or one boy and one girl, and their bond is always there for our fictional soulmates (called Evelyn and Arden in their current reincarnation) despite their doomed fates.
However, only one of our fictional soulmates, (Arden in the current reincarnation) can remember every life, whether the other (Evelyn in the current reincarnation) can only remember the recent lifetimes and never the origin of what set them on their doomed path of reincarnation and love only for it to end in heartbreak and death every time.
The current reincarnation, in which our two soulmates go by Evelyn and Arden) sees Evelyn desperate to save her sister in this lifetime who needs a bone marrow transplant. Every is determined to stay alone and avoid fate long enough to give her bone marrow to their sister. It kills Arden to have to kill their soulmate when they can’t remember why they’re in this tragically fated cycle of love and death. But this reincarnation may be the one that changes everything, as the soulmates’ origin story comes to light, will they ever find a lifetime where they can grow old?
Being someone who’s a hopeless romantic at heart, these fictional soulmates have a heartbreakingly beautiful yet tragic love story that resonates with all of us, with their love that transcends time, gender, sexuality and fate. Love is at the core of the story but author Laura Steven also sentiment and knowledgeably weaves heartfelt and underrepresented sides (in fiction and life) to love and life in Our Infinite Fates. From grief, sacrifice and compromise in love, mental health and trauma, LGBTQA+ representation, culture, health, politics and family.
This is paired with the hopeful highs and fearsome lows of growing up at all stages of life and of relationships, changing with their partner and for themselves, for better or worse. This is some of the many reasons as to why I love this enchantingly casting and bittersweet love story that is as old as fate itself.
The message of the story is clear and heartfelt. Love is timeless. Love is tenderness, it has no body, no senses but finds you and envelops you (if that is something you want) in the most surprising ways, even when someone wants love but is optimistic or pessimistic about love.
Our Infinite Fates is a new universally fated yet doomed romance, with a twist as each other love and recitation ends with death, but the current lifetime is different, as the origin of these soulmates and their connection starts to unravel. It’s not just a tale of romantic love, but it’s also a tale of familial love, friendships and siblings, and a love for yourself and life.
It’s all about letting someone in, taking a leap of love, even if it’s scary doomed, such as the dates of our soulmates (Evelyn and Arden in the current reincarnation) . This romance and the infinite loves and lifetimes of our fictional soulmates is a love story that will stay with you in your heart, mind and soul, forevermore, long after you’ve finished reading.
